I resented it every time, until a manager sat me down and told me: “You think every time you get a new manager, you're being demoted. But actually, you've got a new senior ally who will look to you for guidance. You can even expand your role since they’ll need your help to ramp up!”

As someone who has both gotten layered and had to layer others, this is a really helpful summary. Transparency in sharing that this is something that's going to happen before the new manager is already installed and giving folks a platform to share fears, thoughts, hopes I've found is the biggest leverage to-do in this situation in order to retain people.
