“You need to tell me something I’m doing well!” I said to my close colleague a few years ago. “I’ve only heard about what’s not working lately. I need just one sentence about something good so I don’t get demoralized.” That single conversation (repeated every quarter or two, with various audiences) consistently helps me turn a slow slide toward discouragement into an infusion of energy, so I can put my heart back into building the best products and teams possible.
This is a great reminder. The words “balance” and “accuracy” come to mind. As a critical thinker the challenge is exciting but perception can be skewed if not balanced. Same thing happens if I focus on a problem for too long, until I step back. These are ‘step back points’ needed daily.
