I sometimes think there is an element of clarity of communication currently asked for during promotion cycles, especially in senior levels. This is good as an ask but this sometimes play a huge part especially for people who might not have had english as their main language growing up. This can be seen as lack of clarity of thought, lack of executive presence etc. and can hinder promotions. As you look around and see the successful case studies, you notice the successful ones have in some form or the other masked their accents and sound like a native english speaker before they break these ceilings.
